ESRC National Centre for Research Methods/Southampton Social Sciences

The ESRC National Centre for Research Methods (NCRM) is seeking to recruit an enthusiastic Senior Research Assistant/Research Fellow with previous experience of qualitative data analysis to contribute to work on an ESRC-funded three year study of synchronic and diachronic scaling up in qualitative longitudinal data analysis.

The project will extend and develop secondary analytic practice in working with complex qualitative longitudinal data. It will develop new procedures for working with multiple sets of in-depth temporal qualitative data to produce analyses that scale up horizontally and vertically, and that explore and compare processes of change and continuity. The project will work with existing data from the seven core empirical projects conducted under the ESRC funded Timescapes initiative. It will do so within the substantive area of gendered practices and intimate caring for and about others as part of routine intra- and inter-generational relationships.

Within this role, you will be contributing to analysing and combining qualitative cross-sectional and longitudinal secondary data, making practical arrangements, development and delivery of methods training, writing reports and papers, and the general activities of NCRM. You will also be required to travel in the UK outside normal office hours including occasional overnight stays.

You will have a demonstrated interest in methodology and insight into the intellectual challenge of working with large volumes of combined cross-sectional and longitudinal qualitative data. You will be confident with data analysis software, have some knowledge of the qualitative longitudinal research methodological literature and an ability to work collegially with others. Knowledge of the substantive literature around gendered caring for and about others would also be an advantage.

The position is available from 1 May 2015 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Interviews will be held on Monday 19 January 2015 in London.

For an informal discussion about the post please contact Professor Rosalind Edwards.

Please ensure that one of your referees can testify to you having a comprehensive knowledge of at least one qualitative data analysis software package.

The closing date for this vacancy is 15 December 2014.
