Using some tools we developed as part of our NCRM project, Laszlo Horvath (Exeter) presented some new research on 8 June at NECO 2020 – “Intermedia Agenda Setting and Concentrated News Production: The BBC's role in the UK’s coronavirus coverage.”  In the extended abstract we integrate the results of ethnographic research and automated media analysis. We find that over time starting mid-March 2020, people were much more likely to share news originating from the BBC than other news sources. We also  that the frequency of mentions in the fieldwork transcripts predicted news sharing across all sources.  The integration of ethnographic and computational approaches is part of ongoing work in two other ESRC projects: Identity, Inequality, and the Media in Brexit-COVID-19-Britain (ES/V006320/1) and Identity, Belonging and the Role of the Media in Brexit Britain (ES/R005133/1).
