Description:

This entry-to-intermediate course provides a thorough introduction to the idea, application, and key topics in structural equation modeling (SEM). Broadly, SEM is a powerful family of methodological approaches that typically involves advanced and sensitive estimation of (a) variables’ measurement structure and (b) pseudo-causal mediated relationships among such variables. SEM has now been widely used throughout the social sciences, and provides a flexible and intuitive means of answering complex research questions.

This one-day course will provide participants a working starting point to begin their journey towards understanding and running their own SEM analyses in their work. There will be three parts to the course:

  • First, the course will begin with a lengthy, beginner-friendly overview of the core ideas to SEM. There will be an emphasis throughout on conceptual understanding of such ideas over pure statistical discussion.
  • Second, the presenter will walk participants through the building of an actual SEM analysis in real time using real secondary data. All aspects of the SEM building process will be featured including the core sequential analytic steps of (a) testing the hypothesized model’s measurement structure via confirmatory factor analysis and (b) testing the hypothesized model’s pseudo-causal structure via path analysis.
  • Third, a brief discussion will cover key topics in SEM analysis including core methodological issues, controversies and challenges, and recent developments.

All participants, at their request, will be provided all materials following from the completion of the course. Overall, the course is designed to be engaging and informative, with frequent opportunities for participants to ask questions.

Course timings: 09:00 - 16:00

Cost:

The fee per teaching day is:

• £30 per day for students registered at UK/EU university.
• £60 per day for staff at UK/EU academic institutions, UK/EU Research Councils researchers, UK/EU public sector staff and staff at UK/EU registered charity organisations and recognised UK/EU research institutions.
• £100 per day for all other participants.

In the event of cancellation by the delegate a full refund of the course fee is available up to two weeks prior to the course. NO refunds are available after this date. If it is no longer possible to run a course due to circumstances beyond its control, NCRM reserves the right to cancel the course at its sole discretion at any time prior to the event. In this event every effort will be made to reschedule the course. If this is not possible or the new date is inconvenient a full refund of the course fee will be given. NCRM shall not be liable for any costs, losses or expenses that may be incurred as a result of its cancellation of a course, including but not limited to any travel or accommodation costs. The University of Southampton’s Online Store T&Cs also continue to apply.
