Description:
Join us for the follow-up session of the Innovation Forum on Creative Writing and Social Research titled Whose Words Are They Anyway?
This will be an online workshop taking place Tue 21 January 2025, 1pm - 4:15pm. The event is free to attend.
This workshop continues and extends the discussion from the Forum and explores some of the ethical, and other, issues that emerge from working with participants to produce creative writing. We will explore examples of projects where creative writing comes from observations, direct quotations, people’s own words and from writing collaboratively with people. The event will host six short presentations that draw from different ways of writing, forms and techniques. The presentations will outline examples of challenges faced and explore how the writer resolved them. They will form a prompt for a collective discussion and an opportunity for attendees to feed in with their own projects, questions and solutions.
We aim to create an online resource resulting from the event which attendees will be invited to contribute to. This resource will explore some of the ethical challenges of working with different methods and with participants when generating different forms of creative writing (poetry, fiction, non-fiction for example). The resource will explore:
- what type of methods and people you are working with
- what literary methods are employed to portray participants experiences
- what kinds of issues emerge when you are turning this material into creative writing
- some case studies that explore different ways of dealing with this
We will consider this during the event and will facilitate attendees contributing to it afterwards.
Confirmed speakers include Prof. Sophie Woodward and Prof John McAuliffe (both University of Manchester).
