Dr Aliya Rao
Data analysis is crucial to all social science research, and this continues to be true for qualitative research such as that using interviews, ethnography, and documents. In this workshop we will consider how to approach data gleaned from qualitative research, how to develop an interpretative sensibility aligned with the most trenchant data analysis. On a more practical level, we will consider what tools and concepts can help the researcher translate qualitative data into social science arguments and explanations. This four hour workshop will rely on individual and group work, and will be a space to troubleshoot your questions about developing your analytical practice.
Preparation for participants
To make the most out of this workshop, it would be useful to read Ch. 8 on Data Analysis from Lareau (2021) prior to the workshop. There are three additional pieces of writing that you will need for the workshop (Cameron 2024, Clarke et al. 2024, and Rao 2022). There is no need to read these prior to the workshop, but you are very welcome to skim them. However, please make sure you can access these three pieces during the workshop, either by having them with you on your laptop or iPad, or printing out the PDFs and bringing them with you. There are several activities in the workshop that will require you to reference these. Finally, if you are in the midst of data analysis, please bring any challenges to troubleshoot and we will try to make time for that.
