Description:

Tuesday 23 January 2018, 13:30 to 16:45

This workshop covers the early stages of developing questions and setting up a good design for conducting focus groups and interviews. These methods allow you to gather a wide range of open-ended, qualitative data can provide information about people’s motivations, feelings, attitudes, and what they remember. If done correctly, focus groups and interviews can be a vital part of any project when evaluating programmes and their impact. The early stages are crucial for success, both in receiving good information and having a plan for analysis. This workshop will help you address the following questions about designing focus groups and interviews for evaluation:

  • Why use qualitative methods for evaluation?
  • How can you design a good qualitative focus group and interview-based evaluation?
  • How can you develop a good focus group or qualitative interview guide?
  • How can you identify an appropriate set of participants?
  • How can you avoid common pitfalls in focus group and interview-based evaluation design and data collection?
  • How can you conduct an effective focus group and qualitative interview?
  • How can you take resource and time constraints into account when designing your focus group and interview-based evaluation?
