Description:
Small-n Case Studies and Comparative Analysis
The workshop will consider where case studies come from and what kinds of comparisons might be appropriate (e.g. variable oriented, case oriented) for small-n analysis. The workshop will consider both Mill’s methods of most similar and most different design, as well as other non-variable case-oriented approaches to small-n case studies and comparative analysis (e.g. multi-sited research). The workshop will consider how to design and conduct such comparison, as well as the contribution of these kinds of designs focusing on what kinds of theories can be developed (e.g. typological theorising).
In the second half of the workshop, there will be a practical session. This will allow students to discuss their own work in progress, in terms of issues of case selection, types of cases, and types of comparative analysis.
