British Educational Research Association (BERA) Residential Summer School 2007

1/11/06 - 12/10/07

This project provided a four-day residential school for education research students during the summer of 2007, in association with the British Educational Research Association. The purpose of the event was to bring together research students from across the UK so that they could share their work-in-progress with their peers, undertake advanced research training, and reflect on the salience of methods and themes raised in workshops and plenary sessions for the development of their own research.

Under the broad heading of ‘being an educational researcher’, the residential summer school included four thematic workshops or plenary sessions encompassing the early stages of developing a career in education research. First, researching children and childhood: covering methodological and ethical issues relating to school and non-school based research. Second, analysis of data: specific issues relating to analysing visual data, whether recorded on video tape or during live observation. Third, academic writing and publishing. Fourth, research into policy, addressing research issues related to evolving policies in post-devolution UK. The workshops were complemented by tutorials with experienced tutors, and by research presentations from the participating research students.
